Dr Johan Viljoen (He/Him)

I am a researcher in the fields of Biological Oceanography and Marine Biogeochemistry, with a focus on the dynamic interactions between marine phytoplankton and nutrients. My research aims to enhance our understanding of phytoplankton dynamics and its changes in a warming ocean, given its crucial role in modulating global biogeochemical cycles.

I earned my PhD from the Department of Earth Science at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, under the supervision of Dr. Susanne Fietz. My doctoral research centered on investigating the complex relationships between marine phytoplankton and micronutrients (trace metals) in the Southern Ocean, providing critical insights into the nutrient dynamics and biogeochemical cycles of this vital region. During my time at Stellenbosch University I also gained sea-going research experience on a number of long expeditions to the Southern Ocean in winter and summer seasons.

Currently, I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Exeter, Penryn Campus and a BioGeoSCAPES Fellow. I am actively involved in the UKRI-funded project Phytoplankton Response to Climate Change (PRIME), led by Dr. Bob Brewin. My work at the Centre for Geography and Environmental Science within the Department of Earth and Environmental Science focuses on understanding how phytoplankton communities respond to climate change. This research is essential for predicting future changes in marine biogeochemical.
