Dr Katharine Orchel is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the Centre for Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Exeter with over 10 years' experience teaching in Higher and Secondary Education. She is the Equality, Diversity and Incusion Officer for the department, Community Officer responsible for developing a community of learning amongst students, and is Digital Archives and Library Resources officer. 

 

She is considered an excellent educator by students and staff and has won awards for Outstanding Pastoral Care and Outstanding Overall Performance in the Student Union Teaching Awards. She was awarded Dean's Commendation for her Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice. She was Higher Education Project Officer at the Exeter Education Incubator programme, an initiative that supports educators at the university to deliver pedagogic innovation in their modules.

 

Her research explores ethics of care, social transformation and social justice applied across sectors and scales including recent projects on the marine and coastal environment, statutory social care services, and educational contexts. Dr Orchel has experience in consultancy working on securing funding for innovation projects with game-changing commercial potential.
