Dr Matt Tonkins
Lecturer
Mining and Minerals
Matt Tonkins is a Lecturer in Rock Engineering and Geotechnics at the Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter. His teaching and research interests encompass rock and soil mechanics, geotechnical design, and the application of geotechnical principles to mining and civil engineering projects. He is committed to fostering analytical thinking and problem-solving skills in students, emphasising the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical, real-world engineering challenges.
Matt brings over 18 years of international experience in both open-pit and underground mining operations, including FIFO and residential roles in geotechnical and operational leadership. His expertise, grounded in a strong geological foundation, spans geotechnical risk assessment, resource optimisation, and efficient mine planning. He is a Chartered Engineer with the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and a member of the Institute of Quarrying.
